Given that other codecs such as HEVC (H.265) and Google’s VP9 are now going mainstream, is it too late for fractal video?
To answer that, we need to ask, does fractal video offer any compelling reason to not use other codecs?
Does fractal video have better bandwidth utilization? No, it is currently slightly worse than H.264. Does it have better visual quality? No, the PSNR measures are not different enough than H.264 either. Does it have faster encoding or decoding time? Encoding takes several orders of magnitude longer, and both H.264 and HEVC have hardware decoding support. Fractal video cannot support realtime broadcasting. Fast software-only decoding is useless for mobile devices as it seriously reduces battery life.
This leaves upscaling as the only reason to consider fractal video. However, we know that increasing the detail of an image is mathematically impossible. If we zoom an image of people in a crowd, we do not start to see their jewelry or become able to see the reflections in their eyes. We can also simply use the upscaling circuitry already available in our 4K TV sets. Finally, our principal reason for switching to higher resolution displays is to watch higher resolution content, not to watch old content upscaled. As more content becomes available, there will be less reason to upscale old content. Fractal video is essentially a solution in search of a problem.
